Steve Jobs, in a letter posted on Apples website, said that Apple would make it possible for third-party developers to build there own applications for use on the iPhone. The reason it will take so long to make the software development kit available is that Apple wants to make the iPhone advanced enough and open to developers while at the same time protect the iPhone form viruses and other attackes.
Apples previous position was to allow developers to write applications through Safari and allow Apples web browser to use it on teh device.
Apple has sold more than 1 million iPhones since the device was released on June29th.
